Yet Another Book Meme

I saw this over at Benjamin Solah’s Website and decided to participate. If you would like to give it a go, then go ahead.

Hardback, trade paperback or mass market paperback?

I’m not keen on hardback only because they are harder (and heavier) to lug around with me, but I don’t care if I’m reading either of the other two options.

Barnes & Noble or Borders?

We don’t have Barnes & Noble here and Borders is too far away for me to visit.

Bookmarks or dog-ear?

Anyone who dog-ears a book should be shot! On the spot! No exceptions! I absolutely hate seeing a dog-eared book. Bookmarks are so clean and tidy…use them.

Amazon or brick-and-mortar?

I prefer to pick books up and look at them before buying. It’s so difficult to buy online…and risky, in my opinion. When you buy anything in a shop you walk out with it in your possession. That’s how shopping should be.

Alphabetize by author, by title or randomize?

Considering I’m an organised person, who likes clean and tidy a lot, I’m going to shock you and say “randomise”. I will put sets together but that’s as far as it goes.

Keep, throw away or sell?

In the past I’ve always kept books, but since my recent move I’ve discovered that my library of books is too big and from now on I’ll be getting rid of them. I might sell them on ebay in groups or give them away. I would never throw books away. What a waste.

Keep dust jacket or remove it?

Why would anyone remove it? That makes no sense to me. Keep it.

Read with dust jacket or remove it?

Ditto, see answer to previous question.

Short story or novel?

I’ve never been keen on short stories and never buy anthologies. For me, it’s novels all the way.

Harry Potter or Lemony Snicket?

I’ve never read Lemony Snicket so I have to say Harry Potter, but I’ve heard some good things about Lemony Snicket and intend to read them at some stage.

Stop reading when tired or at chapter breaks?

I prefer to stop at the end of a chapter or at a scene break. I’ll only stop reading in the middle of a scene if I have no other choice, such as, the phone rings or I’ve arrived at my station.

“It was a dark and stormy night” or “Once upon a time”?

Can’t I read both? If I really have to choose one, I suppose I’d go with “It was a dark and stormy night”. It’s what happens in the next few sentences that will make me continue reading or throw the book in a corner.

Buy or borrow?

I buy a lot of books, but they are expensive and in hard times I’ll borrow as many as I can. Besides, borrowing isn’t as risky and it’s the one way I’ve managed to find new, exciting authors to read. That’s always a good thing.

Buying choice: book reviews, recommendations or browse?

A bit of everything.

Tidy ending or cliff hanger?

I like a book to end. Books that leave me hanging are cruel and in some ways…a rip off!

Morning, afternoon or night time reading?

Anytime. Anywhere. I love reading.

Stand alone or series?

Once, in my younger days, I would have said “series”, but as I get older I prefer stand alone. Having said that, until recently I didn’t really have time to read much so maybe that will change now.

Favourite series?

It used to be the Thomas Covenant series, but now…I don’t think I have one.

Favourite children’s book?

I honestly can’t name one. I like lots of books for all different reasons.

Favorite YA book?

Again ditto. See the answer to the last question.

Favorite book of which no one else has heard of?

If no one else has heard of it, I probably haven’t either.

Favorite books read last year?

Bad Monkeys by Matt Ruff
Blood Ties by Pamela Freeman

Favorite books of all time?

There are a lot of books that I really like, but only three that I would consider favourites:

Illusion by Paula Volsky
Doomsday Book by Connie Willis
Scarlett by Alexandra Ripley

What are you reading right now?

Dragonfly by John Farris

What are you reading next?

Don’t know, haven’t decided yet.

Favorite book to recommend to an 11-year-old?

Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia C Wrede

Favorite book to re-read?

Illusion by Paula Volsky, the only book I’ve read three times.

Do you ever smell books?

Doesn’t everyone?! I love the smell of books. That’s the reason I buy more in a bookshop than online.

Do you ever read primary source documents, like letters or diaries?

Page 56, fifth sentence

Alan Baxter is asking people to get involved with a meme he put up on his blog the other day, so here’s my contribution. First, you need to know the rules:

* Grab the book closest to you
* Go to page 56
* Find the 5th sentence
* Write that sentence as your status message
* Copy these instructions as a comment to your status message
* Don’t go looking for your favourite book, or the coolest one you have – just grab the closest one

OK, the book closest to me is a book from the library I intend to read next. It’s called “The Mirror’s Tale” by P W Catanese. Unfortunately, the book only has three sentences on page 56, so I’ve pulled the fifth sentence from page 55 instead.

He put his nose an inch from the wall, peered carefully, and saw an edge as thin as a hair around the spot he had just touched.

I haven’t started reading the book yet, but I’m guessing this is when the main character finds out something interesting about the mirror in question. I find it interesting that a random sentence can give such a big clue as to when I can expect the excitement to begin. All I can say is that the 54 pages and four sentences before this line better be worth it, because I like stories to start in the middle of the action! You will find out, of course, once I’ve finished the book.

If you are reading this, then you can safely say that you’ve been tagged. 😉
