A New Start

In recent weeks I’ve found my memory isn’t so bad and I’m sleeping more soundly, which helps me focus on everyday things a lot easier. As my mind is calmer, I find myself wanting to use a calmer template on this website too. I think it’s safe to say that this is the beginning of the next phase in my life.

Today, I have upgraded WordPress to version 2.2 (which went smoothly, except for the corruption of the images which had to be re-uploaded) and I have also uploaded the new template. I still have some work to do, such as creating the Work in Progress page, but generally what you see is the finished product.

You will notice two major differences. Firstly, there are only excerpts of posts on the main page, and secondly, the sidebar changes when you open a page to read the full post. I believe this provides a cleaner looking site. I have also used the navigation bar at the top on the home page to help smooth out the journey of finding your way around the website.

There is one other difference that you may or may not notice. That change is the inclusion of a small piece of coding from Amazon in the footer. This coding will generate affiliate boxes at random. It will pick up phrases or words and will link to an Amazon product. If the reader of this blog follows the link and purchases the product, I will receive a commission, which will help pay for the costs of running this website.

If you notice anything that needs tweaking, please leave a comment and let me know. Otherwise, I hope you like the new look and now it is business as usual.

  1. Of course, you’re expecting me to say this, but I really like the new theme.

I can see the calmness in it and it’s really simple. It means you can easily slip into reading your posts.

I look forward to reading some more posts from you soon.

  2. Thank you, Benjamin.

Now that most things are up and running, I intend to catch up on the blogosphere (especially the websites in my blogroll), which is something I’ve neglected of late.

  3. Hey Karen,

I must say that there are things I like about the new template. It is much cleaner. However I think I like the old one better, but since I mostly read your site through RSS it’s not a big issue for me. I’m also not big on the excerpts, I know if allows for more posts on the main page but I don’t like having to click more for the content I want.

Anyway no need to worry about me (RSS and all), and I like the new color and cleaner look.

  4. I’m glad you like it, even if it is reservedly, Terry. 🙂 I’m old-fashioned, I just can’t get used to reading via RSS. It’s not the same to me, but everyone to their own.

I’m still fixing the errors from the last time, Deborah – meaning I’m still going through the old posts and categorising them. It’s a huge job and I get bored with doing it so quickly. I’m slowly getting there though. I have installed a backup plugin too (about six months ago), so I’ll never loss all that work again. The backup plugin emails me a backup every week. It’s great!

  5. I like the new look too. I’m interested in what you’ve been saying about WordPress 2.2 and the library plug-in, I might have to start tinkering with my site too… let’s hope this time I don’t reduce it to pulp! You’re way ahead of me!

  6. Thanks for the compliments. I’m still having problems with the sidebar in IE6 (today it’s under the content again) but apart from that all is just fine.

Helen, WordPress 2.2 is mainly internal changes. I haven’t noticed any difference in the way everything works, so it must have been a big “bug” fix.

As for the library plugin…I love it! You really should consider using it, because I know you love books and the plugin is a brilliant way of keeping track of them.

  7. Actually, Scribe, I have to be honest. I’ve found something about the new look that I don’t like. Google Ads! 🙁 I understand the need to make a dollar in this world, but I do have an issue with those things. The Amazon thing, however, is a good idea.

Also, don’t forget Library Thing (do a search for it). They have a great piece of code that let’s you show off random books from your library, which I think is pretty cool. (You can have a look at the last thing on the lefthand sidebar of my blog to see what I’m on about!)

  8. I know, Alan. Honestly, I’m not keen on them either, but I’m trying them out for a while anyway. At the moment, I’m making more on those ads than I am through Amazon (which has made me the grand total of zero). I’ll see what happens in the next month or so.

I checked out the Library Thing, but it was offline at the time. I’ll have another look in a day or two.
