I’ve always called myself a fantasy writer - hence the name of my domain “fantasyscribe” (Scribe being my online name) but I’ve been seeing the term “speculative fiction” everywhere over the last week or two and wonder if that is a better description of what I write.

However, what exactly is speculative fiction? Is it science fiction and fantasy? If that’s the case, then at present it wouldn’t be right to call myself that because I write fantasy. I do have an idea for a science fiction novel though. Actually, the plan is quite thorough and I think I’d enjoy writing it.

So what should I call myself…a fantasy writer or a speculative fiction writer? What do you think?
