I Published a Book … and Didn’t Know

Today I discovered the paperback version of Domino Effect has been published, and I didn’t know it. Oops!

How could I publish a book without realising it? Actually, it was easy. The files had been uploaded and ready to go a couple of weeks ago. The plan was to wait for the ebook release day, which is 7 January 2019, and then I would press the magic button a publish the paperback. Too simple.

On Boxing Day, I went to ensure everything was uploaded and correct; which it was. I guess when I reached the end I clicked on “publish” instead of “save and exit”. *sigh*

Never mind, I considered unpublishing and starting again, but at the end of the day … does it really matter? Not really. So I left it as it is.

This means that Domino Effect, the paperback version is available for purchase from any Amazon store. Go forth and purchase. 😀

New Project for 2019

With the publication of Domino Effect happening in early January 2019, I will be left with no option but to move on to the next project.

For me, it’s an old project. Actually, it is the first manuscript I wrote … and finished. It’s a story I love. The characters are like old friends, whom I know extremely well. And it’s time this baby of mine came into the limelight.

What is the name of the project? Good question.

It has gone from many names over the years. As I don’t want to confuse issues, I will only mention the name it is known by now — Whispering Caves. At present, I will say this is the working title as it may, or may not, be changed before publication.

Whispering Caves is a fantasy novel. Some might describe it as a Time Travel Romance, but that would not be exactly right. The main character does not go back in time, but side-ways. And although there is romance, the focus is the adventure, the danger, the confusion, the main character goes through.

I must admit that I am looking forward to working on this novel. There are many versions. In 2019, I will decide which one I will go with and start the manuscript on the road to publication. Watch this space.

Domino Effect: Paperback Version

I have been asked if a paperback version of Domino Effect will be available for purchase. The answer was always going to be no, but after careful consideration I have decided that I will release a paperback version.

In fact, I have already commenced preparations and can confidently advise that the paperback will hit the online bookstore shelves approximately three to five days after the release of the ebook. More details in relation to price, distribution, etc, to follow at a later date.

Meanwhile, please bookmark the Amazon page of the book–in the store of your choice. Just search for “Karen Lee Field”. And don’t forget to spread the word.

Reminiscing

As the years pass, we gather more and more things that we can’t bring ourselves to throw away or discard, just in case we discover a need for those items. Whatever they may be.

Today, I found myself rummaging through an old trunk and I found multiple backup disks. I decided that it was time to go through them, make decisions on the content and possibly lighten the load.

I found myself taking a walk down memory lane. Music I liked to listen to. Photos I haven’t seen for some time. Free software I had downloaded and believed I couldn’t live without, but haven’t used for over ten years. And then I opened a folder to discover my very first website.

On 6 April 2002, I uploaded The Writer’s Cave. This was before I discovered WordPress (or perhaps it hadn’t been invented then). The template was one of those old fashion ones that I had self coded and was extremely proud of. You know the ones I mean. They were colourful, had flashing icons and images that were nearly always slightly blurry. It was brilliant (at the time), but embarrassing to look at now. I had a good laugh over it.

I went through the folders and saw how I learned HTML and CSS, and how that helped my website to evolve. And then in 2004 I announced I was moving to a new location and that’s when (it appears) that I started using WordPress and my new website became The Desk of Karen Lee Field.

A lot has happened since then. In my life. On the internet. In the world. It’s hard to remember life without the internet, yet life shouldn’t revolve around the world wide web. Life should actually revolve around family and friends, finding love and happiness. Enjoying everything the world has to offer, not just the things we find on the web.

Full Description:

Owen has taken his own life. His family has no idea why.

Kirsti, his twin sister, is overwhelmed with feelings of confusion and finds herself disconnected from everyone and everything–her family, her friends, her job, her life. She cannot sleep, cannot think, cannot stand the way people tiptoe around her. But it is the images that she cannot let go of.

Jenny, his mother, is consumed with guilt and fear. She didn’t see the signs and didn’t know her son needed help, so what kind of mother does that make her? And what about her two surviving children? Not to mention the darkness that has enveloped and threatens her family. That scares her more than anything.

Tim, his older brother, is angry. He wants to be as far away from his family as he can get. But his mood has changed, he no longer cares about anything. He finds solace in the bottom of a bottle and in bags of illegal tablets.

Is it worth trying to pre-sell a book?

This is a question most indie authors would ask themselves at some stage. From the research I’ve done, pre-selling your book before it is released can give you the opportunity to begin building buzz and anticipation. You could get a jump start in sales and start building a fan base. In theory, by the time your book is released, your pre-sales could even place your book in the best selling charts!

Sounds great, but where does one start in achieving this?

Firstly, you have to write a book. Obvious, I know, but it is a necessity.

Once the book is written, it’s time to set up your pre-sale campaign by creating a sales page on your website. Spend time in writing a worthy description. Ensure your book cover stands out and draws the reader in. And if you have them, or can get them, compile testimonials.

These days, everyone wants and loves something for nothing, so offer a freebie with your pre-sale. This could be a free short-story, written by you or a writing buddy (this is a good way to help other authors too). Maybe you’ve got some resources or templates that you can offer. Put some thought into it and be a bit creative. The free item could possibly draw more readers to your book.

Offer your pre-sale readers the opportunity to read the book before the rest of the world gets hold of it. Allow them two or four weeks to read and, hopefully, review your book. They get first glimpse and you might get a review. It’s a win-win opportunity.

Think about offering a limited edition of the ebook to anyone who pre-orders your book. Perhaps include extra material or a different cover, or a coupon code for a discount for your next book.

Don’t forget to include a ‘buy now’ button on your sales page. How can people pre-buy if there’s no purchase button?

And once you’re all set up. Announce the pre-sale on your website and through email. And share it on Facebook, Twitter, and through any other online group you belong to. Start the buzz and hopefully the rest will take care of itself.
